In a time where the West was rarely seen along comes a Western of class, grit, comedy, and drugs. Anyone who has ever watched a western or read a book must know the story of Wyatt Earp. This film is about after he is a lawman and decides to take his brothers and their families to live out the remainder of their days making as much money as possible with as little grief as possible.
It’s not about the movie and how the West was won, It’s about the facial hair!
Sadly for the Earp brothers (that sounds really funny if you say it out loud) trouble seems to follow them to this town and low and behold they are lawmen again. With Wyatt’s friend Doc Holliday they are off for a shootout and it’s a great one.
I was a girl brought up on westerns and I believe I have watched everyone that John Wayne was in. This film brought back the memories of the Wild West and the guts and gore that went with it. The characters are already formed in your head if you have ever heard any of the Wyatt Earp stories and even though you are coming in half way through his life, this film is stunning. When I first saw this film I cried like a little girl at the end and the snot flowed freely .
John Wayne, more American than Apple Pie and there was nothing he couldn’t do on a horse, apart from drink milk.
The cast is of an ok quality; Kurt Russell is great as Wyatt and his brothers are well acted too. But Doc Holliday aka Val Kilmer steals the show in every scene he is in. His sick, dying character is the best and most faithful of friends. Val Kilmer acts his socks off in his best role to date and no matter how enigmatic Kurt Russell is in this film he never gets close to Val. When Doc Holliday enters and says the line “I’m your huckleberry” my knees get weak. I believe this is one of the best Westerns there has been in quite a while.
Someone else who makes me weak at the knees .That and Hugh is topless. Reason enough to be in every review .
It’s a great story and well told; could easily have been an hour longer and I wouldn’t have minded. Westerns are dangerous territory after the world grew up with Robert Mitchum, John Wayne, and of course Mr. Clint Eastwood. The world of Disney remade Pirate movies, maybe Westerns are next, as long as they don’t start with something like The Lone Ranger with a really weak lead actor (not Johnny Depp)…
