If you aren’t familiar with the awesomeness that is Step Brothers, you’re missing out on life, son! It has EVERYTHING, Hulk hands, lumberjacks, fruit ninjas, zombies, night vision goggles, dinosaur men, wine mixers, bunk beds, vintage porno mags, centaurs, playground melees, boats & hoes, beautiful, life-changing music, and just SO MANY ACTIVITIES!!
Step Brothers is about two 40 year old men (Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly) still living at home who become stepbrothers when their parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) get married. Can they adjust to each other, and can their parents finally push them out of the nest? Chaos and awesomeness ensue.
Will Ferrell. John C. Reilly. The total logical extreme of the modern manchild comedy trend. Add that up and you have pure, uncut Mexican black tar hilarious. This movie is dumb, sure, but dumb in all the right ways, and utterly, incredibly committed to its lunacy.
Case in point
Like most Will Ferrell comedies, Step Brothers is quotable for days, and if you disagree, then you’re probably Adam Scott, who everyone knows is just the worst.
You. This is you.
If you want to get all technical, Reilly and Ferrell deliver their finest comic performances in my opinion, and the supporting cast is great (yes Rob Riggle is even tolerable). Adam McKay uses some clever visual and editing tricks to liven things up, and the music is aces. There’s even a surprisingly potent emotional undercurrent to this story of growing up and striking out on your own, for all those people who like feelings and shit.
For the rest of us, there’s the Boats and Hoes.
If you handcuffed me to a chair and cattle-prodded me repeatedly until I named a favorite comedy, this would probably be it.
