Debbie Reynolds has had one of the most interesting careers that Hollywood has ever known. Her film roles range from Singin’ in the Rain (1952) to the Halloweentown Disney Channel franchise. Surprisingly, though, Debbie Reynolds has never won an Academy Award, and only received one nomination for the title role in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Nevertheless, that performance really could be her personal best (not to mention her personal favorite).
Nominated for six Academy Awards, this film features all of the main elements of a classic (and classy) Hollywood musical. The score is sumptuous, the cinematography is captivating, and Debbie Reynolds shines as the famed *Spoiler* survivor of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Harve Presnell also won a Golden Globe award for his film debut as Johnny. The entire movie also feels very similar to the Barbra Streisand classic Funny Girl (1968), given the parallels between the two beloved musicals.
Kathy Bates might have played Margaret “Molly” Brown as a supporting role in James Cameron’s Titanic (1997), but Debbie Reynolds really was the ideal actress to play “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”! Too bad Shirley MacLaine turned down this Oscar-nominated role!
