Ken and I usually take the dregs of a month- it’s hard to ask our writers to take a second film only to hang a Hotel Transylvania 3 or Unfriended sequel on them.
It didn’t take Ken long to deliberate before opting for this instead.
Hotel Transylvania 3 is, you guessed it, the third movie about a hotel for monsters run by Dracula (Adam Sandler), but this time they’re on vacation on a cruise ship, and also Sandler is feeling stirrings of love once more in his cold, dead heart. Plus some grotesque shit involving Van Helsing.
Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack) has always done the animation for this series, but for this installment he’s writing for the first time. He’s clearly the one with creative control here, and if you’re a fan you’ll find something to like for sure.
If you’re just looking for something tolerable to bring the kids to, this has some pretty antic jokes and setpieces that work quite well and also reminded me quite a bit of the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Storks brand of slapstick and randomness-based humor that is a checkmark in the plus column for me.
The message is also quite nice- it’s really a perfectly acceptable family film with a little something extra for the animation geeks.
That being said, it’s a very particular style of animation, one that is perhaps a little too spastic in my book. It can be difficult tracking all of the loopy, hyperactive movement in a scene, which isn’t my cup of tea.
Adam Sandler is… fine, but if Sandler has worn out his shtick in your eyes, then you’re not going to find anything you enjoy in this very Sandler-y performance. By the second time he’s spouting gobbledygook in a Billy Madison voice you may well find it intolerable.
Hotel Transylvania 3 is surprisingly tolerable, even out-in-out funny that exuberant Genndy Tartakovsky/Storks sort of way. I didn’t hate it.
