It’s that time of year! Everyone loves watching Christmas movies; whether it’s the classics, or the Hallmark Channel holiday movies, December is the time for Christmas movies. So without further ado, here are six of my favorite holiday movies to watch during this time.
A Christmas Story
I’m going to start off strong with a classic Christmas movie. There’s obviously a reason TBS puts this on a 24 loop from 7pm on Christmas Eve to 7pm Christmas Day; I assume it’s because every loves this movie. It’s endlessly quotable, and it’s worked its way so far into the pop culture zeitgeist that you can buy the bunny pajamas, the leg lamp, or a multitude of things to decorate your house for the holidays with. This movie is ingrained in my earliest memories from childhood. This movie is my childhood Christmas.
St. Bernardus Brewery – St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
St. Bernardus is a classic and delicious brewery. Its Christmas Ale isn’t as old, but the brewery comes with a pedigree as large as A Christmas Story. So just shut up and enjoy this delicious winter beer with this classic.
It’s a Wonderful Life
Another classic from my childhood, except where as I don’t watch A Christmas Story in its entirety around the holidays, I just put it on on Christmas Eve either when nothing better is on or to see the best parts. However, with It’s A Wonderful Life I have to watch this movie every year in December. It’s a dark movie, but it has such an inspiration ending that you can’t help but tear up and get goosebumps. There’s a reason this film is on AFI list of the 100 greatest films of all-time. It’s an all-time classic that should be viewed at least once a year.
Boulevard Brewing – Nutcracker Winter Warmer Ale
Nothing like a Christmas classic from my hometown to go along with possibly the ultimate Christmas classic. It’s got a rich amber color and hints of molasses perfect for those cold winter nights while you watch Jimmy Stewart learn why he should be alive.
By far the raunchiest film on this list, Bad Santa isn’t just a brilliant Christmas comedy, but it’s a brilliant comedy all its own. I have seen this film so many times it’s probably the only Christmas movie I can watch anytime of the year because it is so hilarious. Of course, when I have kids I’m not going to be able to watch this with the family. So I’ll have to watch it on my iPad late at night and try not to wake up my wife while tears streamed down my face from laughing at Billy Bob Thorton verbally berates children. If you’ve never seen this film get your entire life together and go watch it; you won’t regret that decision.
Port Brewing – Santa’s Little Helper
This one is kind of in the name. Everyone loves Marcus, but it also packs a heavy punch at 10% ABV. This is the perfect beer to get you on Willie’s level. However, if you don’t like chocolate in your beer I’d avoid this one.
This has become the Christmas film that I love as an adult. I never watched this as a kid, and if I did I don’t remember because I fell asleep. Let’s be honest, this movie is the visual version of spiked egg nog. It warms your soul, wraps a blanket around your heart, and serenades you to sleep. This is the perfect movie for a snow day when it’s single digits outside and a foot of snow; you put it on and can drift to sleep. I absolutely adore this film, but totally understand people that find it boring. But when it comes to Christmas Eve there’s no other film I’d rather watch.
Highland Brewing – Highland Cold Mountain Winter Ale
With hints of chocolate & caramel, this is the perfect beer to enjoy on a cold northeastern winter night, snuggled under a blanket. Also, the low alcohol content means you can bring it to grandma’s house for you both to enjoy while you watch this classic.
What else can I say about Christmas Vacation that hasn’t been said or isn’t already known? Unlike Bad Santa, this film isn’t as re-watchable during the rest of the year, but during the holidays it’s possibly the funniest Christmas film. Like Bad Santa it is also endlessly quotable. The only difference is this can be watched by the entire family. Of course, some people might be against me because Chevy Chase is a grade A Asshole, but this is one actor for whom I can separate the art from the artist because the Vacation films are too funny to ignore. This is a top choice for a family comedy during the holiday season, and if you show this to your kids young enough you’ll probably be lucky to watch it a couple of times in December.
Goose Island Beer Company – Goose Island Christmas Ale
Goose Island makes another appearance to represent Chicago. It’s not the strongest beer in this six pack, but who needs a strong one when you’re laughing your ass off? This brew contains crystal hops for that extra bit of spice.
With a lesser budget and lesser stars this film would’ve easily found its way onto the Hallmark Channel. It’s got the perfect amount of schmaltz to make your heart feel all warm and fuzzy without making you sick. This is the perfect film about love because it shows every kind of love and love on the entire relationship spectrum, from new love blossoming to old loves falling out. This is the perfect Christmas movie to watch with your significant other and cuddle on the couch under the covers. Just be sure to grab the tissue box and the hot cider.
Liefmans (Duvel-Moortgat) – Liefmans Gluhkriek Christmas
A classic European beer with a nice ruby red color is perfect for this love-filled holiday movie. The only difficult part is probably finding this beer in the States, but if you can it’ll be a match made in heaven.
