First, a little bit about Gideon King & City Blog; they’re an New York City-based fusion jazz band made up of musicians of varying eclectic styles. And they’re constantly compared to Steely Dan, one reason being a current member of City Blog also belonged to the jazz rock band Steely Dan. Another reason is their musical complexity that has various elements of rock, jazz, soul, funk, and pop. And that’s the best way to describe their current release, Upscale Madhouse, a very New York-y sounding album that will be among the most smooth, satisfying music you’ll hear all year.
Beginning with “Straight To Hell” a real melancholy tune with really good vocals and cool guitar solos, the album picks up a bit on “Broken and Beautiful”. It’s by no means any more cheerful than the previous track, but it does continues with the awesome guitar solo work this time mixed in with awesome piano music that will keep you around for the rest.
“Fake It On Facebook” is a solid track that really emphasizes the strengths of each member of the band. It gives you soul, dance, jazz rock, pop, and contains solo numbers from all. “Gun To My Head”, the lead single, has plenty of international flavor attached and the same strong musical arrangements that are present all over this one of a kind album.
You’ll have a good time listening to this album while enjoying it with a beer in hand.
