365 Days of Movies- Henry J. Fromage’s Brave New Year Edition- Week 21

Working like a sled dog, but still making sure to make time for some cinematic highlights here and there- both from today and recent years.

79.  Kaili Blues

This enigmatic film is clearly the work of an auteur in the making (28-year old Gan Bi just debuted his ecstatically-received Long Day’s Journey Into Night at Cannes this month).  It is also, however, quite slow and opaque, although the bravura one-take second half that winds through a Chinese town like Scorcese unhinged is indeed a sight to behold.  Gan Bi is on a (cinephile’s) household name trajectory, that’s for sure.  Three Beers.

80.  Deadpool 2

Apparently I’m in the minority, but I liked this one better than the original.  David Leitch clearly has better directorial chops than Tim Miller, the humor is nastier and less fixated on the easy laughs, and, of course, Ricky Baker for the win.  Two Beers.

81.  Solo

This, however, is clearly the least of the Disney Star Wars films, showing its troubled production history at the seams even though I actually liked Alden Ehrenreich’s Harrison Ford impression and anything involving Donald Glover’s Lando.  Three Beers.
