The Daily Shotgun: New DVD Releases July 3rd
By: Henry J. Fromage –
I guess nobody buys DVDs around the Fourth of July (except maybe stoners), because every major studio appears to have completely ignored it for their releases. Even the batshit titles you usually find hiding in the cracks of a release date aren’t as batshitty as normal. Swinging with the Finkels is undoubtedly horrifying, and Freddy Frogface sounds tragic, but Some Guy Who Kills People shows not even the Direct-to-DVD crowd feels like they need to try all that hard anymore.
God Bless America –
Great premise- man gets fed up with our vapid E! Network and American Idol society and sets out trying to fix it, with bullets. Unfortunately, director (yep) Bobcat Goldthwait beats you over the head with a message that only he appears to think is tough to grasp. It could have been much better, but if you want some dark, dark humor and cheap vicarious thrills, you can do worse as well.
The Hunter –
Willem Dafoe gets to display his acting chops playing an animal… mercenary? who is tasked with hunting down the presumably extinct Tasmanian Tiger. Beautiful Tasmanian scenery and just a dash of Sam Neill make this one well worth your time.
Bullhead –
This was actually a late inclusion in last week’s list of DVD releases. Chances are this Foreign Language Film Oscar nominee slipped under your radar, but its star, Matthias Schoenaerts, won’t be doing the same for very much longer. Give this a watch for his amazing performance alone, although there’s a pretty good bovine steroid mafia story in there as well.
