The Daily Shotgun: January 16th

Tangled was one of the more pleasant cinematic surprises in 2010, and it’s becoming more and more clear that the Pixar influence on Disney has made any film it puts out one to anticipate.  They just announced that their first traditionally animated film since 2009′s The Princess and the Frog, will be Frozen, riffing on the Hans Christian Andersen tale of The Snow Queen.  The plot will follow a plucky young lass named Gerda who must save her sweetheart from the Snow Queen who abducted him, twisting his mind with a magical mirror.

And maybe there’s a Liam Neeson lion or something too

The Star Trek villain casting merry-go-round has finally landed on, as the AV Club is fond of calling him, exceedingly British person Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock).  After Benicio del Toro and Edgar Ramirez have fallen by the wayside, so have rumors that the new villain is Khan, as Cumberbatch doesn’t really look anything but, well, exceedingly British.

Although I suppose, if pressed, he could play a Welshman

I’ve talked a bit about the Evil Dead remake that Sam Raimi’s producing, but now we’re starting to get a bit clearer idea of what the approach will be.  Lilly Collins has signed on to star as a recovering drug addict who finds the Necronomicon while on a trip with five friends.  She’ll be taking over the Bruce Campbell role, and Diablo Cody (Juno) has be brought on to do some script rewrites.  The pattern that emerges is smart-talking, ass-kicking female empowerment tale, which works just fine for me, especially as they’ve already avoided Cody’s last genre-flick mistake.

Namely, having anything to do with Megan Fox.
