Three years after the success of Blue Harvest, Seth MacFarlane and the gang returned to have their take on Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back as another blackout hits the Griffins and leads Peter to continue his story.
Again, like Blue Harvest, this follow up is funny and well-written and you can also see that instead of just making gag after gag the writers and creators show their respect to George Lucas’s creation and whilst doing that they gave it the Family Guy treatment.
The way they tied this together with the pop culture is very clever, along with getting the whole Empire storyline in under an hour.
There are new characters involved along with some recycling as we see Ernie the Giant Chicken as Boba Fett and we see Carter Pewterschmidt, Mort Goldman, and Meg Griffin return in new roles this time as they play Empire Palpatine, Lando Calrissian, and the Giant Space Slug.
The one moment that stands out for me is when Peter responds to Lois’ “I Love You” as he is about to be frozen and let’s just say it’s not “I Know”.
They also point out the fact that Lando wears Han’s clothes without any reason why.
If you’ve got the DVD, then watch the extras; especially I would recommend watching the table reading because in some cases it’s funnier than the feature length episode.
Some of you maybe thinking, “Really, two beers?” but I have one main reason.
This feature length episode is not as funny as Blue Harvest because to me it’s more of a funny cartoon take on Empire rather than a spoof.
For fans of both Family Guy and Star Wars this will be up your alley and if you have Blue Harvest then you should definitely watch this.
Take a Drink: every time someone says “focus”.
Take a Drink: if you know the 80s reference.
Take a Drink: when the original script is being used.
Do a Shot: if someone says “Empire”.
Do a Shot: if a character from Blue Harvest returns.
