Take a Drink: whenever Chris plugs Red Bull.
Take a Drink: every time Ethan pouts.
Do a Shot: for each dick pic.
Take a Drink: every time Mr. Green shows up.
Do a Shot: every time Isaac does a drug.

Christmas comedies are a cinematic tradition. Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, and Scrooged are a few of the classics that come to mind. A Christmas movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Michael Shannon, and Anthony Mackie doesn’t really scream “classic”. But when you throw in a heaping amount of drugs, alcohol, and Miley Cyrus, this might just turn into one for the ages.
The Night Before tells the story of three best friends, Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Seth Rogen), and Chris (Anthony Mackie). They have the annual tradition of going out and partying on Christmas Eve, which stemmed from Chris and Isaac keeping Ethan company after his parents died 14 years earlier. This year is the last year they will be spending together due to Isaac having a baby and Chris’s career taking off. A healthy amount of drugs, alcohol, and memories lead to one of the most epic nights of all time.
I need to start off by saying that this was the most I have laughed in a movie since the original Hangover. There are very short stretches where nothing funny is happening on-screen and those moments are generally filled with poignant life lessons (pretty much whenever JGL is on-screen). This movie has Michael Shannon being a maniac, Seth Rogen consuming almost every drug known to man, and James Franco dick pics. Pretty much a win on all fronts.
I absolutely never thought that I would say that Michael Shannon stole the show of a Seth Rogen-headlined comedy. The dude just slays every single time that he is on screen. He plays possibly the perfect example of a burned out drug dealer. Every line he states is just pure comedy gold and he really needs to start popping up unexpectedly in more movies. Just thrown in random roles.
Does seeing Seth Rogen get high and make an ass out of himself ever get old? The answer is no, it absolutely never gets old. We are used to seeing him smoke a little weed and act like a silly goose. Here we get him in full “tripping balls” mode, and it is fucking glorious. Add in cocaine and it kicks his schtick to a whole new level. I swear that almost all of his roles are identical to each other, but I will watch each one of his new movies until he stops making them.
The three leads work really well together and that is showcased in their performance of “Christmas in Hollis”, which cemented this movie as a classic to me. JGL handles most of the drama in the movie, with his character having to come to terms with having to grow up. Anthony Mackie puts together a nice blend of comedy/drama, and hopefully he starts doing more comedies instead of being in Avengers 14.
Welcome to a new Christmas classic. Watch it, love it, then watch it again next year. Just don’t do any mushrooms and cocaine before watching.
