Comedy sequels are usually pretty shitty, with only a handful being equal to/better than the original. When I saw that Horrible Bosses 2 was being produced, I had my fair share of doubts. What are they going to try to kill their new bosses or something? The only thing that hooked me about the trailer was Jennifer Aniston’s hotness and the potential to hear some pretty filthy things come out of her mouth.
Once again we follow Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day), and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis), as they clumsily navigate another harebrained plan. Dale invents a new shower accessory, “The Shower Buddy”, and they are approached by Burt Hanson (Christoph Waltz), CEO of a “SkyMall-Like” company that wants to distribute the product. Things don’t go as planned and the trio are left with no money and are faced with losing their company, so they decide to kidnap Hanson’s son, Rex (Chris Pine), in an attempt to collect ransom money to pay off their debts.
As usual, all three lead actors are solid with Jason Bateman leading the group. He plays the “straight man” with amazing ease, and you feel like he is the only one who could be considered reasonable. Charlie Day steals most of the scenes, just like in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with his crazy energy. He gets a lion’s share of the great one-liners in the movie, and is great at counteracting Bateman’s dry humor.
Good lord, can we get this Jennifer Aniston in every movie that she is in? She is absolutely on fire and seems to just keep getting better with age. She steals the show in every scene that she is in and really needed to be featured more. She plays so well off of Bateman and Day that they should probably all star in another movie together. I will also state on the record that Aniston is the funniest actor in this movie.
Is there a more lovable asshole than Kevin Spacey? He can be an absolute prick on-screen and you just instantly like him. He’s in the movie for a very small amount of time, but brings the laughs in a big way.
I am not 100% sure why Christoph Waltz was chosen to play the villain in this movie. The writer and director gave him next to no screen time and his comedic ability was vastly underused. He was great in his limited screen time but he definitely needed more of it. Chris Pine is Chris Pine, a lovable prick with limited acting range. Jamie Foxx gets an expanded role and does really nothing with it.
If they make a second sequel, the producers and director need to expand the role the Jason Sudeikis has. He is a one-note character that gets pretty limited laughs compared to the screentime he gets. He is great at playing the “horny guy”, but there is little else that he does in the movie.
Is Horrible Bosses 2 funnier than the original? No. Is it on the same level? Yes. This is one of the are sequels that happens to match the original in quality, and also happens to be one of the funniest movies of 2014. Go see it before it gets lost in the Awards Season rush in the next few weeks.
