I got out to California again, and then finally back home, so the theatrical viewing was a bit more fertile than it has been.
70. You Were Never Really Here
This film is a raw nightmare and an animalistically satisfying gory genre flick all rolled into one. Lynne Ramsay continues to outdo herself, Joaquin Phoenix transforms into a bull of a character unlike any you’ve seen him play, and I can’t recommend this enough. A Toast.
If you don’t expect more than what the trailer promises- namely some engaging spy games starring Jon Hamm in pure soused existentially lost Don Draper glory, then you’ll get exactly what you pay for (and be happy for it). Pretensions to some weightier than that don’t quite land. Three Beers.
While I don’t quite ascend to quite the same heights as some who are proclaiming this one of the best comedies in years, I no doubt got my laughs out of this Apatow-templated studio laffer with a surprisingly deep and progressive core. Three Beers.
