166. The Grinch
Illumination Grus-up Dr. Seuss a bit with this really quite warm and fuzzy rendition of the preschool set’s most famous misanthrope. Four Beers.
167. The Meg
This is basically Sharknado with tens of (Chinese) millions more thrown at it. It has the comic timing of Trump rally and the CGI of, well, a Sharknado. There will probably be a sequel. Five Beers.
Steve McQueen is an absolute genius at whatever he does, and now that includes crafting adult thrillers with absurd casts that come as close to distilling the allure of The Wire into a two hour film that I’ve yet to see. While it may be surprising to see one of our artiest of auteurs try his hand at a more conventional subject matter, he does exactly what you’d expect- direct the hell out of it and wring all the thematic resonance he can from these characters and this situation, however airport novel the initial template. Two Beers.
