The Daily Shotgun: July 13th

Well, chances are you’ve already heard, particularly as last week was a slow one utterly dominated by this news: Marvel’s next big franchise will be Guardians of the Galaxy.  Savvier comic nerds than I might have been able to glean this from the appearance of villain Thanos after the credits for Avengers, and he will indeed be the antagonist for this film, leading into a likely massive team up in Avengers 2.  So, who are these guys?  Well, there are two versions in the comics world, the original and a recent reboot, and characters from both might be mixed together for the film.  Anyway, either version included a team of rather unique human and alien characters with superpowers who work together to, well, guard the galaxy.  A script is already in place, and reportedly has a more comic bent, so now we just have to hold tight to see who will direct and star.

Hmmm, what are Ryan Reynolds and Martin Campbell up to these days?

Don’t despair, there is yet more Marvel news based on obscure properties for you to enjoy.  Ever since Disney bought Marvel there’s been speculation on how Disney Animation (and/or Pixar) might make use of Marvel properties for an animated film.  Well, that day has come, as Big Hero 6 will be that movie.  This comic involves yet another superhero team, this time a group of young heroes brought together by the Japanese government.  It’s also not known exactly what team members will make it into the film, especially as some are mutants that have also appeared in X-Men universe, making them officially Fox Studios property.  Ah, nothing to stoke those nerd fires quite like a good ‘ol business discussion…

Stay tuned for the next adventures of… Mighty (Fab) Accountant!

And now for something that I’m not even going to attempt to tie into Marvel- Broken Dream.  This film has actually been in development for a decade now, originally set to star River Phoenix and be directed by John Boorman until that obviously didn’t work out.  Well, Boorman still wants to the “loves story that takes place in a futuristic world” that involves an illusionist who discovers how to make stuff disappear for real.  And he’s found his new, slightly less attractive and slightly more ginger River- Caleb Landry Jones.

Oh, that’s right, he was in X-Men: First Class.  Now to find a way to tie all of this to Kevin Bacon…
